How Dame Maggie Smith got the acting bug. Peter Firth reads Michael Coveney's biography of one Britain's best-loved actors.

It includes a passage on Alan Bennett's writing for the Dame,
"affectionate and wry on the everyday speech or ordinary people"

The likely candidate for the postcard would be Michael Coveney, but I probably won't bother.

#54 Sean Kemp, R4 Today

John Humphries and Sean Kemp discussed politicians and photo opportunities, prompted by an image of Putin in a mini submarine. The discussion turned to Cameron in particular and British politicians in general and how they cannot be seen to be travelling or living luxuriously . Two OPs deployed in quick succession by Sean,
"When they do try and sort of do the 'oh I'm being and ordinary person' thing they are not actually treated like an ordinary person,  they and do the like ordinary things like read the paper and have some crisps..."
It might be argued that it was correct usage in contrasting politicians and "ordinary people", but in this case Sean seemed to be accepting the distinction.

R4 Sunday Worship OCit

A first capture from Sunday Worship. Broadcast from Lichfield Cathedral, introduced by The Very Rev'd Adrian Dorber, who said,
"Good Morning. This weekend the nation marks the 70th anniversary of VJ day, the end of World War Two. Yesterday this cathedral hosted a national service for the children and families of Far East prisoners of war. In today's worship we continue to remember prisoners of war who suffered and died at the hands of their cruel captors, but also the ordinary citizens of Japan who died in the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki  before their rulers surrendered."

Saturday 15 August 2015

R4 8:03 OJap Rupert Wingfield-Hayes

Saturday 15th August R4 Today at 8:03

Rupert Wingfield-Hayes reporting from Japan on the 70th anniversary of the bombings and surrender,
"Even after 70 years August 15th is a day that Japan still struggles with. For the first time ever Japan's emperor Akihito expressed profound remorse for what had happened in a the war, a war that was fought in his father's name. But that stood in stark contrast to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe who failed to use this anniversary to make his own fresh apology for Japan's actions At the Yasukuni shrine, tens of thousands of ordinary Japanese have been lining up to remember the two-and-a-half million who died. For most, there is nothing political about this, but among the crowd here are groups of men with crew-cuts, wearing paramilitary clothing and carrying imperial army flags. They march in and bow deeply, not only to the war dead, but also to the twelve Class-A war criminals whose spirits are also enshrined here. That includes the spirit of Hideki Tojo, the man who led Japan during the war and who these right-wingers still revere as a martyr."

'Let us be clear: Ed M is not JFK,' wrote Mehdi Hasan in the New Statesman in [2010]. 'But he does have the all-important ability to connect with ordinary people.'

"... the real struggle is within these countries. They need their young people with initiative and education to lift them out of poverty and so tempting the brightest and the best to leave their countries, tempting the doctors to leave Africa and come and practice in London is very nice for the doctors: it is not a great moral position for ordinary people in Africa. Bruce Anderson uses it well

From the Spectator 23rd May 2015
"Most of those involved in politics, including pollsters, are partisan and obsessive. They can remember how they voted in that Little Piddleton parish council by-election 20 years ago. Ordinary people — no, that sounds patronising — real people: that is not right either. Politicos, though odd, are real. But sensible people do not spend all their time thinking about politics. They are wondering what to have for supper, where to go on holiday. They are worrying about their children’s progress at school. Then a pollster breaks in on them. So they politely turn their attention to lesser matters."

Cartoon from the Spectator.

This is the third decent usage, Peggy Seegar (correcting John Wilson), Andrew Neil (adroit recovery) and now Bruce Anderson. Perhaps I should have a congratulatory postcard in addition to the original critical design.

Dilemma, a BBC Radio4 show where comedic panelists discuss tricky situations humorously.
I expect it was being used ironically, so no postcard.

Farage OF

BBC R4 News 8pm I'm fairly certain I heard Mr. Farage using the phrase "ordinary folk", but that news broadcast is not available for playback. Same for the nine o'c news - they have have programmes either side, but not the news.

#36 Double Lammy

David Lammy, Labour MP and prospective mayoral candidate on Sunday Politics today, twice in one paragraph. 41 mins in.

"I am standing here in my aunt's house, a home I have known all of my life. This was a house built by the GLC for ordinary people to get on the ladder. My aunt worked as a nurse alongside my family. London is rigged (?) for ordinary people these days, you can't get a house, you can't get a council house: we built forty last year. We need new ideas for a new London. That is why I want to run for Mayor."
