Spectator, 20th June

In last week's Spectator, Dot Wordsworth discussed a recent Observer article on "speaking human": Ed Miliband's inability to do so and the necessity of the next Labour leader to have that ability. She observed that in 2010 Ed was praised in the New Statesman for his communication skills, she quotes,
'Let us be clear: Ed M is not JFK,' wrote Mehdi Hasan in the New Statesman in [2010]. 'But he does have the all-important ability to connect with ordinary people.'
I guess it's a little late for a postcard.

Anthony Glees, Moral Maze, Ordinary Muslim Mums and Dads

Moral Maze, 24th June, on Islamic State Recruitment, about 17 mins in. The witness was Prof. Anthony Glees, UBucks, Centre for Security and Intelligence Studies,
'one reason there are fewer people going out now than there were last year is that many ordinary Muslim mums and dads are saying to their children, "you cannot go, you're out of your mind, this is not a wonderful gap year, this is the brutalisation of the human spirit."'

Joanna Cherry SNP MP, Any Questions 19th June, waxing incoherent on Greece.

"Clearly Greece has to pay back its debts, but the current proposals are making it impossible for Greece to do that and I don't think we can overlook the suffering of many ordinary Greek people as a result of the financial crisis that there is in Greece,"

A second postcard for Justin, also caught on 27th March.

#40 David Lindo R4 Today

Radio 4's Today programme at 7.28 discussed a vote for a national British bird, organised by ornithologist David Lindo, and won by  the robin.

"the people that voted, the majority, about 60% were not connected to any of the birdwatching or conservation bodies so, in other words, a completely new audience: ordinary people who have no vested interest in nature."

Not patronising, no postcard.

#39 Paul Collier on the Moral Maze

Professor Sir Paul Collier on the Moral Maze, discussing the boat people crossing from Libya, around 35 mins. in said,

"... the real struggle is within these countries. They need their young people with initiative and education to lift them out of poverty and so tempting the brightest and the best to leave their countries, tempting the doctors to leave Africa and come and practice in London is very nice for the doctors: it is not a great moral position for ordinary people in Africa. We shouldn't be celebrating that."

#38 Angela Eagle on Daily Politics

Angela Eagle, Labour Party Deputy Leader candidate on today's Daily Politics, 37 mins in.

A rather rambling and decidedly patronising response to a question on the LP's woes:

"... we can't as a movement that believes in ordinary people having the chance to make the best of their lives and the best opportunities spend our whole time blaming one another ..."
