#54 Sean Kemp, R4 Today

John Humphries and Sean Kemp discussed politicians and photo opportunities, prompted by an image of Putin in a mini submarine. The discussion turned to Cameron in particular and British politicians in general and how they cannot be seen to be travelling or living luxuriously . Two OPs deployed in quick succession by Sean,
"When they do try and sort of do the 'oh I'm being and ordinary person' thing they are not actually treated like an ordinary person,  they and do the like ordinary things like read the paper and have some crisps..."
It might be argued that it was correct usage in contrasting politicians and "ordinary people", but in this case Sean seemed to be accepting the distinction.

R4 Sunday Worship OCit

A first capture from Sunday Worship. Broadcast from Lichfield Cathedral, introduced by The Very Rev'd Adrian Dorber, who said,
"Good Morning. This weekend the nation marks the 70th anniversary of VJ day, the end of World War Two. Yesterday this cathedral hosted a national service for the children and families of Far East prisoners of war. In today's worship we continue to remember prisoners of war who suffered and died at the hands of their cruel captors, but also the ordinary citizens of Japan who died in the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki  before their rulers surrendered."

R4 8:03 OJap Rupert Wingfield-Hayes

Saturday 15th August R4 Today at 8:03

Rupert Wingfield-Hayes reporting from Japan on the 70th anniversary of the bombings and surrender,
"Even after 70 years August 15th is a day that Japan still struggles with. For the first time ever Japan's emperor Akihito expressed profound remorse for what had happened in a the war, a war that was fought in his father's name. But that stood in stark contrast to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe who failed to use this anniversary to make his own fresh apology for Japan's actions At the Yasukuni shrine, tens of thousands of ordinary Japanese have been lining up to remember the two-and-a-half million who died. For most, there is nothing political about this, but among the crowd here are groups of men with crew-cuts, wearing paramilitary clothing and carrying imperial army flags. They march in and bow deeply, not only to the war dead, but also to the twelve Class-A war criminals whose spirits are also enshrined here. That includes the spirit of Hideki Tojo, the man who led Japan during the war and who these right-wingers still revere as a martyr."
